On Feb 21st, Uplay found our All-Star staff and coaches at Lee Antonello Elementary school, in North Las Vegas. Pam Madrid, our school contact, is the 3rd-grade teacher that reached out to request Uplay to visit her school, exactly 1 year ago at the Las Vegas Challenge.
Pam has been a disc golfer for 18 years and a huge fan of ALL things professional disc golf, and she was inspired to get one of Uplay's presentations to her school. For the past 2 years, she has served as the official LVC volunteer coordinator, easily described by her staff as the angel that can organize and lead an army of volunteers (over 140 that work this DGPT Elite series event), but has been involved in supporting the LVC event since 2009. This request was very near and dear to the local disc golf community, Uplay and the DGPT.
The disc golf presentation itself was an extra special kickoff to the 2023 DGPT Community Connect program as Uplay introduced the program with newly hired staff members, Ella Hansen and Angie Smith.
This was the first event of Ella performing her duties as the Director of the Community Connect program, and she absolutely nailed it. Her communication with all of the Pro Ambassadors, the teachers, and most importantly with the students was professional and concise. Ella displayed confidence and comfortability to instruct the Uplay basics while adding her own form of creativity, which was FUN for all involved!
Angie Smith, Uplay's media collection, photographer, and live SM producer, will capture and share all of the amazing photos and videos on Uplay's social media and Flickr accounts all season.
I was honored to join touring Pro ambassadors Luke Humphrey, Cynthia Riciotti, and Sarah Gilpin to teach the basics and deliver the pure joy that disc golf brings. We successfully taught the entire 1st, 3rd, and 4th graders, and obtained the firm commitment from the head PE teacher Mr. Luthiger, that he will continue to teach the rest of the school disc golf in his PE classes this year and beyond!
Uplay coaches were able to dedicate Uplay's Basic curriculum book, 30 Discmania starter packs (90 discs), and 2 baskets with a pair of Disc Dots on each, to the Lee Antonello PE department, and send the 120 students taught on the day, home with Trash panda minis and putters donated by UDisc. Each disc includes a QR code sticker on the back so the students are able to find disc golf anywhere in the world, follow their new heroes, and so much more. The entire rest of the student body, totaling 502 students - K through 5th grade, also received a disc and mini along with the invitation to spectate this weekend's DGPT event for FREE. Now that feels like a "perfect scorecard" to report!!!
Please take a moment to enjoy the story that these priceless pictures tell, and be sure to feel that same joy and success for supporting this wonderful program and organization.
