Uplay has been working with the Juneau Disc Golf Club (JDGC) on a shared mission to teach and enhance the lives of local youth and communities through the wonderful gift of disc golf.
JDGC's First Women's Workshop
Last January, JDGC reached out to Uplay with a goal of providing disc golf to local youth and surrounding communities. Stats show that Alaska’s youth face a variety of unhealthy habits and dangerous activities, including its extremely high suicide rates. It’s our shared belief that disc golf will help with the negative and life-threatening effects youth are prone to, by introducing a low impact, affordable, and accessible outdoor activity that is fun to play.
Uplay is excited to deliver educational disc golf trainings and equipment to the native culture while leaving a positively lasting impact on their youth and every option to excel at the sport.
We are planning for the sustainable success of disc golf by inviting surrounding communities PE teachers to attend our school training and clinics. We are bringing awareness to our partners and reporting about our experience, in hopes of funding future course installations and more educational opportunities.
Throughout the week of August 23, 2021 – August 27, 2021, Uplay Founder & Executive Director, Zoe AnDyke, Uplay Board President & Lead Ambassador, Dustin Keegan, along with Uplay Media Member & Pro Ambassador, Ella Hansen, will lead this teaching project:
- Uplay will spend a full day of school instructing disc golf basics at Juneau Douglas High School & Auke Bay Elementary School.
- Uplay will host a kids clinic inviting all youth in the community to enjoy the benefits of disc golf through games and skill stations.
- Uplay will provide a women-focused community clinic day where basic disc golf techniques will be taught and then followed by an optional doubles format event.
- Uplay will also host a free community clinic at Juneau's local disc golf course. This event will start with group instruction and then end with skills stations. Attendees will also be invited to join random flip doubles after the clinic.
We have strategically planned these events in the days before the Great Land Cup tournament hosted by the JDGC, so that everyone who has participated in our events and clinics are aware of the tournament and will have a chance to witness the organized competition.
We could use your help!
We ask for your help to raise funds in support of this incredible project. Through your donation, you will help fund the instruction and the equipment to help these programs succeed for years to come. Donated funds will specifically help support the Uplay instructors at schools and community clinics, fund one basket and 20 starter disc sets to be left at each school, as well as producing videos to document the trip and teaching experience.
All donation amounts are greatly appreciated! As a thank you, your name will be included in the video as well as included on social media promotions. Uplay is a 501c3 non-profit organization and will provide a tax-deductible receipt for your donation amount.
